Every week I take my dog to one of LA’s many parks. I let her go off leash so we can both run and sniff the world as we please. The higher in elevation we go, the more the city come into focus. Los Angeles oozes around every hill’s corner like those commercials for Drano or Scrubby Bubbles. I love the trails for the views, but I also love thinking about my neighbors zigging and zagging their way up the mountains and what their favorite part might be.
An exploration into the roadside motel room.
For six months I spent the night in different motels encircling Lake Tahoe. I brought with me a custom suitcase/ pochade box, a collaboration between J Damron and myself. Inside the case, were my painting supplies and overnight necessities. From check in to check out, I was a plein air painter of my suite. The collection below are paintings from my experience and installation shots from it's exhibition at the John and Maureen Ashley Gallery in Incline Village, NV.
Fish House/ Human House is a site specific work created at Sagehen Field Creek Station in Truckee, CA. The Fish House was originally constructed as an observation room to the visiting scientists to monitor the Lohontan Cutthroat Trout population. Fish House/ Human House flips the gaze to give the human visitors the opportunity to feel watched, recorded, conscious and ultimately curious about their place in the world.
The installation includes five acrylic panels describing the behaviors of homo sapiens alongside informative illustrations that enhance the trouts' understanding of our lifestyle. The rest of the basement is outfitted to resemble a traditional, human basement, replete with an outdated couch, faux-wood paneling, and a Big Mouth Billy Bass.
This work in permanently installed at Sagehen Creek Field Station and is part of the Archive Collections at the Center for Art +Enviornment, Nevada Museum of Art.
In early 2019 I was approached by Marie Fischer Interior Design, a residential and commercial interior design firm based out of San Francisco, to create a large scale painting for a new apartment complex in Mountain View, CA. Inspired by the mid-century design of the building, the painting would be black and white and depict the famous Linda’s Diner- home to the famous “Parisian Burger”. The painting was too large to fit in my studio, so the whole process was au plein air. In Situ photos to come.
A Series of photographs I call "Things Left Behind”. Made for my thesis exhibition in 2010 at Vassar College.
